Delete or Clear Assessment Grades

Remove a score that was entered in error or graded too early, directly from the assessments view of your gradebook.

Written by Monica Burke

🎯 Purpose

Sometimes a score needs to come out of the gradebook, whether it was added by mistake or an assessment was graded before students finished. This guide walks you through clearing a score directly from the assessments view.

❗️ Based on your district settings, your standards view may show on the left. In addition, not all districts choose to use the assessments view of the gradebook. In that case, you would only see the standards view.

🔑 Key Functions

  • Clear a Score: Remove a single assessment score from the assessments view.

  • Keep Student Work Intact: Attached work, responses, and rubric evidence stay saved after a score is removed.

  • Automatic Status Reset: Completion and submission statuses return to their previous state.

✅ Prerequisites

  • An account with access to the gradebook.

  • The assessments view enabled for your district. Some districts use only the standards view, and in that case this process will not apply.

  • An existing score in the assessments view that you want to remove.

🔢 Remove a Score from the Assessments View

  • Step 1: Navigate to your assessments gradebook.

  • Step 2: Double-click the score you'd like to remove.

  • Step 3: Press the Delete or Backspace key on your keyboard.

  • Step 4: Press Return or Enter key on your keyboard.

✅ Success! You've now removed the score from the gradebook!

What happens after you remove a score:

  • Completion statuses are reverted to the previous state. If an assessment showed Graded, it will be reverted to Turned In.

  • Submission statuses are reverted to the previous state as well. If an assessment was listed as On Time, the submission status will now be null.

  • Any attached work is saved, including rubric attachments and recorded answers or responses.

  • The standards linked to the assessment score are deleted. The attempt is also deleted, so the student who showed five attempts at the standard will now only show four attempts.

❗️If your assessment was assigned with an availability window and utilizes auto-grading, there will need to be an open or future availability window for this assessment before you are able to clear the score for any students who did not start the assessment. If all availability windows have ended, the assessment score will clear and then immediately show a 0 because of the auto-submit feature.

What if I want to permanently delete the assessment from my drafts?

This can be done in the Drafts section of your assessments. Find the details here.

Am I able to remove an assessment I see in the gradebook from the entire class?

Yes! You'll need to go to the Assigned section of your assessments. Click here for detailed instructions.

I added the grade directly to the gradebook using the + button? How do I remove that?

This is also done from the Assigned section of your assessments. Each + (plus) assessment creates an assigned assessment automatically for you so you can manage the students assigned to the assessment or adjust any of the original settings. Here's how you can delete that + assessment.

Am I able to remove an assessment or unassign it from certain students? I already removed the grade, but the students aren't responsible for this assessment.

Yes, you can unassign the assessment from specific students so they no longer see it in their assigned assessment list. Click here for details.
