Otus Insights: AI Dashboards

Skip the spreadsheets and start building custom dashboards simply by chatting with Otus Insights AI.

Written by Brooke Fodor

🎯 Purpose

The Insights AI Dashboards feature transforms the Otus Insights page from a chat experience into a full analytics workspace, where administrators and educators can ask a question, refine it, save it, organize it, and drill into it. Through an interactive chat experience, users can build custom charts and tables (widgets) and organize them into named, reusable dashboards that turn one-time data explorations into durable, long-lasting artifacts, all without needing technical or data expertise.

💡 Why Use This Feature?

✅ Visualize district, school, and classroom data all in one place

✅ Ask follow-up questions and receive AI-powered analysis

✅ Save time by generating charts and insights through a simple conversation

✅ Customize visuals to match your specific reporting needs

✅ Drill into summary data with a single click

✅ Turn one-time data explorations into saved, reusable dashboards

✅ Make faster, data-informed decisions with AI-generated recommendations

Before creating your first dashboard, confirm the following:

  • Your district has purchased and enabled AI Insights

  • You have the appropriate permissions for the data you want to visualize

  • Third-party integrations (NWEA, i-Ready, etc.) are connected to Otus.

💡 Who Is This For? The Insights Dashboard is enabled for participating districts. If enabled, this feature is available to administrators and educators whose districts have purchased and enabled AI Insights.

📊 Create a Dashboard

Step 1: Insights Dashboard Landing Page

  • From the left-hand navigation menu, select the Insights icon (⭐).

  • You will land on the Insights landing page, which displays example prompts, tool capabilities, and a list of available datasets to help you get started.

  • From within Insights, select Dashboards from the navigation.

  • You will see all of your existing dashboards displayed as tiles, sorted by Last Updated by default.

  • Use the Search bar or Sort dropdown to locate a specific dashboard.

Step 2: Create a New Dashboard

  • Click the + Create Dashboard button in the upper-right corner of the Dashboards landing page.

  • A new interactive chat workspace will open.

  • In the chat input field, type a plain language description of the dashboard or widget you want to build.

    • Example: "Create a bar chart showing ELA mastery by grade level for the current school year."

    • Example: "Build a dashboard showing Grade 7 average grades by subject and by school."

  • Press Enter or click the Send button to submit your prompt.

  • The AI will generate a chart or dashboard based on your request and display it alongside the chat.

Step 3: Add and Customize Your Results

  • Once your widget or dashboard appears, you can request adjustments directly in the chat.

    • Example: "Change this to a pie chart."

    • Example: "Make the bars blue and sort by highest mastery."

  • You can also make direct edits to your dashboard, including:

    • Colors, chart type, and size of individual widgets (see below)

    • Position: drag and drop widgets to rearrange your layout

    • Date range: set a dashboard-level date scope that all widgets will honor

💡 Continue to ask questions in the chat to add more results to the Dashboard.

Step 4: Save and Manage Your Dashboards

  • Your dashboard is automatically saved and will appear on the Dashboards landing page once created.

  • From the landing page, you can manage your dashboards:

    • Rename a dashboard by clicking the edit (pencil) icon next to its title

    • Clone a dashboard to create a copy you can adapt for a different audience or time period

    • Delete a dashboard you no longer need

    • Sort dashboards using the Last Updated dropdown

    • Search for a specific dashboard using the search bar

  • Each dashboard tile displays the number of widgets it contains and the date it was last updated.
