The standards view of the gradebook provides educators with a comprehensive view of students' performance on each standard that has been assessed. In this article, we'll explore each section to gain a better understanding of the standards view and how to utilize filters effectively for better insights into student progress.

Default Settings

By default, the gradebook displays all standards assessed on assessments with due dates in the current grading period. The district selects the default mastery setting and default grading scale in the Main Admin account.

These filters can be applied in the standards view in each account type - admin, teacher, student and family.

Grading Period

Grading Periods can be set up in the Main Admin account to segment the school year. The default view is always the currrent grading period. If your district does not have segmented grading periods set up, your gradebook will include the performance on standards assessed throughout the entire school year.

From the dropdown menu, select the grading period you'd like to view. This will calculate the overall standard performance for each standard assessed during that grading period.

💡Tips:

  • If a standard or attempt from an assessment is not visible for you, check that you are viewing the correct grading period based on the due date of the assessment.

  • If an assessment does not have a due date, the graded date is used instead.

  • If you need the assessment's standards to be included in a different grading period, you can edit the due date or add a due date. Here's how.

Grading Scale

Grading scales determine the different levels of achievement a student can attain on a standard attempt. For example, a scale could outline the following levels of achievement: Mastery, Near Mastery, Approaching Mastery, and Not at Mastery.

Use the dropdown menu to change which grading scale is used to display the overall standard performance for all assessments using that particular scale.

The grading scale is selected when the assessment is created and cannot be changed after the assessment has been submitted by students. If the wrong grading scale was used, you can clone the assessment and change the scale to re-assess the students' standard performance based on the new scale.

In the examples below, you'll notice that the overall standards scores and the number of attempts are different for each standard based on the scale that was selected. That is because selecting a different grading scale changes the actual data that you are viewing.

❗️Important Notes

  • The available grading scales are determined by the district through the Main Admin account.

  • The default grading scale will always be the first one in the list; grading scales are listed in alphabetical order.

  • Grade levels must be set for all classes for the correct grading scales to be available. You can set them in your Class Info tab.

Mastery Setting

Standards-based grading allows for the mastery of a standard to be calculated in a few different ways. Otus uses the following five calculations to determine the mastery of standards:

Mean

Overall standard performance is determined by the average level the students performed at.

Mode

Overall standard performance is determined by the level students performed at most.

Most Recent

Overall standard performance is determined by the level they've achieved on the most recent attempt.

Highest

Overall standard performance is determined by the highest level the students have achieved.

Decaying Average

Overall standard performance is determined using a calculation that gives more weight to the most recent scores when averaging all attempts.

Select the mastery setting you would like to use to calculate the overall standard performance from the dropdown menu.

In the examples below, you'll notice how the standard score changes based on the mastery setting, but the number of attempts remains the same. That is because you are viewing the same set of data (the same standards attempts) but calculating the overall score in a different way.

❗️Important Notes:

  • The available mastery settings are determined by the district through the Main Admin account. Not all accounts will have all five mastery settings available.

  • The default mastery setting is also determined by the district. Teachers are unable to change the default mastery setting.

  • Grade levels must be set for all classes to automatically apply the correct mastery settings. You can set them in your Class Info tab.

Filter Standards

When you open the standards view of your gradebook, you will see all standards with a due date during the current grading period. You can isolate individual standards to view the performance level for those standards only.

Using the Standards Filter

  • Step 1: Select the ellipsis in the upper-right corner.

  • Step 2: Select Filter Standards.

  • Step 3: Select Clear Filter.

  • Step 4: Scroll through the available standards or search by the title of the standard. Then select the standard(s) you wish to view the data for by checking the box.

In the example below, the gradebook only shows data for standard CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.7.1.a, since that is the standard that was chosen in the filter.

💡Tips: If a standard you're expecting to see is missing from the list of standards available in the filter, check the following:

  • Grading period and due date

    • Does the assessment have a due date that falls outside of the grading period you selected?

    • If there is no due date, was it graded outside of the grading period you selected?

  • Assessment Standards

    • Are the correct standards linked to the assessment in the draft view?

Filter Assessments

When you open the standards view of your gradebook, you will see all assessments with a due date during the current grading period. You can isolate individual assessments to view the performance level for the standards attempted on that assessment only.

Using the Assessments Filter:

  • Step 1: Select the ellipsis in the upper-right corner.

  • Step 2: Select Filter Assessments.

  • Step 3: Select Clear Filter.

  • Step 4: Scroll through the available assessments or search by the title of the assessment. Then select the assessment(s) you wish to view the data for.

In the example below, we choose the assessment Math 6: Dividing Fractions Using Models Quiz. Now the gradebook only shows data for the standards attempts from that specific assessment.

💡Tips:

  • Grading period and due date

    • Does the assessment have a due date that falls outside of the grading period you selected?

    • If there is no due date, was it graded outside of the grading period you selected?

  • Assessment Standards

    • Does the assessment have standards linked to any of the questions or rubric descriptors?

FAQ and Troubleshooting

Click to view the FAQ and Troubleshooting details.

What if I can't see a standard or an attempt from an assessment?

Check the following:

  • Make sure you are viewing the correct grading period based on the due date of the assessment.

  • If an assessment does not have a due date, the graded date is used instead. If needed, you can edit the due date or add a due date to include the assessment's standards in a different grading period.

  • Make sure that standards are linked to the assessment.

What if I used the wrong grading scale for an assessment?

If the wrong grading scale was used, you can clone the assessment and edit the scale to re-assess the students' standard performance based on the new scale.

What if a column is blank in the gradebook after filtering assessments?

If a column is blank, it means that particular standard was not assessed on the selected assessment. Double-check the assessment's content and linked standards.
