Below, you will find information on how to create a practice/sandbox class with a practice/sandbox student account for testing purposes! This can be applied to districts rostered via nightly sync or manually rostered districts.

⚠️ Sandbox Classes for Nightly Synced Districts

  • If your district uses nightly rostering syncs with Otus, the sandbox class should be created in your SIS (or wherever your rostering data comes from).

  • Any sandbox class you create manually in Otus will automatically be archived each night when the sync runs.

If you still want to manually add a sandbox class in Otus, you can follow the steps below.

  • Note: Manual rostering must first be enabled by the Otus team. The class will still be archived nightly.

Create a Sandbox Class

  • Step 1: In a Teacher account, select the Classes Module. In an Admin account, select the District module.

  • Step 2: Select Add Class.

Some districts have this function turned off. If you do not see the "Add Class" button, please contact your administration and request that this be enabled so you may create your sandbox environment.

💡 Tip: While you do have the option to add students while creating the class, it might be helpful to first save the class "shell," then return to add one or more sandbox students to the class.

Add a Sandbox Student to a Class

  • Step 1: From the Classes Module, select the "sandbox class" that you created. If you have not created your sandbox class yet, please follow the steps listed above.

  • Step 2: Click Class Info.

  • Step 3: Enter the sandbox student's email and click Add. (This is a new/fake student. Do not use a student that already exists.) This email does not have to be real/functioning, unless you plan on testing Google items.

💡 Tip: If you want to test Google integration functions as a student, you will need to create a Gmail account for this practice student, then use that email to roster them into this sandbox class.

  • Step 4: Select Yes to create the student's account.

  • Step 5: Fill out the student information, then click Save. You will then need to click Save once more time, at the bottom of the Class Info page.

FAQ and Troubleshooting

If my district is rostered through an integration such as Clever or SIS (student information system), can I still create a sandbox class and a sandbox student?

Manually added classes and students will be removed during a nightly sync. It is recommended to add the sandbox class wherever your rostering data comes from
