Many times, students show work on a piece of paper or in a notebook. Students can share that work with you by uploading an image of that work into their assessment.
In Advanced Assessments, there are two question types that will accomplish this:
File Upload - students can attach a picture of their work by uploading an image or taking a live picture with their device's camera.
Image Annotation Upload - students can attach a picture of their work by uploading an image.
What is the difference between File Upload and Image Annotation Upload?
With File Upload, the attachment is uploaded as a link within the assessment. The teacher will click the link, and the picture of the work page will open in a new tab. This question type also has the option of enabling the student's device camera to take a live image while in the assessment.
With Image Annotation Upload, the attachment is uploaded directly within the assessment. The teacher will see the complete image in line with the rest of the assessment without needing to click on a link. This question type does not have the option of enabling the student's device camera.
Use File Upload to Add an Image of a Work Page
As a reminder, the File Upload option is where students can attach a picture of their work by uploading an image or taking a live picture with their device's camera.
Adding the File Upload Question
After you have created your advanced assessment and started to build an item, follow the steps below to insert the file upload question type.
Step 1: Add the question.
In the Other category, select File Upload.
Step 2: Add directions and enable the camera.
Add directions to instruct the students on how to use the question type (optional). The example below says the following: "This is where you will add an image of your work page. Select the Camera icon in the upper-left corner. Hold your work page up to your device's camera and take a picture of it by selecting the Capture button. You can either Retake or Accept the image. Once you accept the image, title the image and select Save."
Check Enable Photo Capture if you'd like your students to be able to use their device's camera to capture the image.
Select Save.
Step 3: Scoring
By default, this question type will be worth 0 points. That means when grading, the student will earn a 0/0.
If you'd like to award points to this question type, you'll have to expand the More Options menu and enter a numeric value into the Max score box.
Student Actions
See the clip below for how students will use this question type.
Step 1: Select the camera icon.
Step 2: Position the page in front of the camera.
Step 3: Select Capture.
Step 4: Select Retake or Accept.
Step 5: Title the image.
Step 6: Select Save.
The image will display as a link that the teacher will download.

Grading
When the teacher is grading the assessment, the image will appear as a link. The teacher will click on the link to download the image. See the clip below:

Use Image Annotation Upload to Add an Image of a Work Page
As a reminder, the Image Annotation Upload option is where students can attach a picture of their work by uploading an image.
Note - Image Annotation Upload does not have the option of enabling the device's camera. This means that the student will have to take a picture of their work by other means, then upload the image file into the assessment.
Adding the Image Annotation Upload Question
After you have created your Advanced Assessment and started to build an item, follow the steps below to insert the Image Annotation Upload question type.
Step 1: Add the question.
In the Other category, select Image Annotation Upload.
Step 2: Add directions.
Add directions to instruct the students on how to use the question type (optional). The example below says the following: "This is where you will add an image of your work page. Select the Upload an image button. Find the file of your image."
You can disregard the Image Preview section - this is if you wanted to add your own image for students to annotate. Since you are using this question for submitting an image, this is not necessary.
Step 3: Scoring.
By default, this question is worth 1 point.
You can change the point value to 0, or you can check the Unscored/Practice usage option under the More options menu.
Student Actions
Note - since this question type does not allow for the use of the device's camera while in the assessment, the student will have to take a picture of their work page separately.
Step 1: Select the Upload an image button
Step 2: Locate the file and select Open.
The image will display in full.
Grading
When the teacher grades the assessment, the image will appear in full with the rest of the assessment.
Other Ways to Show Work
Drawing - provides works pace directly within the item that includes options like a line tool and protractor, as well as free-hand writing or drawing.
Math Essay (best for math assessments) - students are given space to type out their work using a wide variety of math symbols and operations.
Use a pre-built work page - students can show their work on a work page designed for the specific assessment. They can then turn in the work page for the teacher to reference while grading the assessment.
