Now that you've started to build an advanced assessment, you may want to add a File Upload question.

The File Upload question type allows students to upload a file for review by the teacher. This question is non auto-scored, and there are many acceptable file types, including:

  • Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher, Open Office, MATLAB,

  • Altera Quartus, Verilog, V, H, C, C++, S, Assembly

  • Files to be uploaded must be less than 10MB.

Build the Question

  • If you are creating a new item, select the + Create button on the assessment builder, title the item, then select the Add New plus sign to add a question.

  • If you are adding to an existing item, simply select the Add New plus sign (as shown above) to add a question to the item.

Next, select the Other category from the options on the left, then select File Upload.

Compose the Question

  • Fill in the Compose Question area with your desired question or instructions to the student.

  • You have many formatting options from the Rich Text toolbar, including changing the font size, adding tables, using math symbols, adding multimedia, and more! Click here for more information on the different functions of the Rich Text toolbar.

Enable Photo Capture (optional)

  • Do you want your students to use their device's camera to take a live picture? Select Enable photo capture.

Select File Types

  • Determine which file types available will be accepted, and the maximum number of files allowed. The first four are accepted by default, untick the box beside a file type to disable it or tick the box beside it to enable it. The number of maximum files ranges from 1 to 12, and is set to 12 by default. This value will be visible to the student.

❗ Some file types will automatically download onto your device when you open them. This is based on the type of file and your device settings.

Set Scoring

In the More Options menu, enter the number of points you'd like the question to be worth in the Max score field:

  • Minimum score if attempted: A value indicating how points a student will receive for attempting the question.

Student Preview

It's highly recommended to Preview the question as you are building it in the item. This displays the question from the students' perspective and review your formatting of the question.

Click to see a short clip of this question type from the student's perspective.

More Options

  • Max width: The maximum width of the file upload container.
