When using the Read&Write extension on a Chromebook, the toolbar normally appears when the user clicks the Read&Write icon in the Chrome toolbar. However, in environments that use the LockDown Browser Chromebook extension, this icon is not available.
A keyboard shortcut provides an accessible way to activate the Read&Write toolbar—ensuring students can continue using Read&Write tools during secure assessments.

⚙️ How It Works

Since most Google and extension settings are controlled from the Google Apps for Education Admin account, a keyboard shortcut can be assigned in Chrome settings that triggers the “Activate the extension” command for Read&Write. Once set, pressing the shortcut will open the Read&Write toolbar—even when the LockDown Browser hides the extension icon.

💡Tip: If students are able to manage their own settings, they can also follow these steps.

🎯 Why Use This Feature?

  • Supports accessibility by ensuring students can still access assistive tools.

  • Allows for a secure testing experience to prevent cheating and distractions.

Getting Started

Visit chrome://extensions/shortcuts in your Chrome browser to view available extensions and assign a shortcut to activate the Read&Write extension. The shortcut is up to you.

Example for Windows: Alt+Shift+R

Example for Mac: Option+Shift+R

Once assigned, the keyboard shortcut will launch the Read&Write toolbar whether you are in a regular Chrome session or using the LockDown Browser.
