When you assign an assessment, you have the option to add a due date and a start date. This article explains how due dates and start dates function, and how to add, edit, or delete both settings.

General Information

Due Date

  • Adding a due date is optional.

  • Any assessment submitted after the due date will be set to a late submission status in the gradebook.

  • Due dates determine the grading period the scores will appear under within the gradebook.

  • Due date impacts the order of standards performance history in the standards gradebook.

  • Due date also determines whether or not an assessment is included in the report cards being generated based on custom date range or grading period that was selected.

  • Due dates do NOT auto-submit assessments.

  • Due dates do NOT lock the assessment. Students are still able to take assessments when a due date has passed.

Start Date

  • Assign at a later date is an optional setting.

  • Students do not see a timestamp for a start date. They will see the assessment appear on their assessment list when the start date/time arrive.

  • A notification will be sent to the student's notification feed on the start date (the notification will not send when you initially assign the assessment).

  • Students will not be able to see the assessment in their assessment list until the start date.

Set the Due Date and/or Start Date

  • Step 2: Make your date selections.

    • Due Date: Select the calendar icon in the Due Date field to choose the time and date the assessment is due. Then select Apply.

    • Start Date: Click the toggle for Assign at a Later Date to enable the setting. Then select the calendar icon in the Start Date field to choose the time and date you want to make the assessment available to students. Click Apply.

  • Step 3: After adjusting any other desired settings, select Assign to make the assessment available to your students.

  • Step 2: Click the ellipsis to the right of the desired assessment and choose Settings.

  • Step 3: Make your adjustments, then click Save.

    • Start Date: To edit the start date, click the calendar icon, select a new date, then click Apply. To delete the start date, turn off the toggle button for Assign at a Later Date. Click the Save button at the top right to save your changes.

I have an assessment that is appearing in the wrong grading period in my gradebook. What should I do?

In order to get an assessment to appear in the correct grading period, you can add a due date or edit the due date to ensure that it falls within the correct date range.

If I add a start date when I assign an assessment, what happens if I make changes to the assessment between the time that I assign it and the start date?

For simple and rubric assessments, any changes you make will be applied to previously-assigned assessments. For Advanced Assessments, you would need to unassign the assessment and reassign the newest version. Otherwise, the changes you make will not reflect on the previously assigned version.

How do due dates and start dates work if my students are in a different time zone?

We properly account for the time zone of the machine in use. For example, if a teacher located in Pacific Time zone sets an start date and time for 11:00 a.m., a student located in Central Time zone will get the assessment at 1:00 p.m.
