Now that you've started to build an advanced assessment, you may want to add a Gridded question.

The Gridded Question type has been developed based on the STAAR science assessments standards (Griddable Questions For Science), which use a type of open-ended question known as a griddable item. In this question type, students are presented with a grid of columns containing bubbles, with the numbers 0 to 9 in a vertical list underneath.

The purpose of griddable items is to provide students with the opportunity to derive answers independently without being influenced by answer choices provided with the questions.

  • You have many formatting options from the Rich Text toolbar, including changing the font size, adding tables, using math symbols, adding multimedia, and more! Click here for more information on the different functions of the Rich Text toolbar.

Set Correct Answers and Scoring

➡️ Set Correct Answers and Determine Point Value

  • To set the correct answer, choose the correct bubbles in the Set correct answer(s) section.

  • Determine the point value of the question by typing a number into the Point(s) field.

❗ Do you need to change the number of columns, or the available numbers? Check out the Layout section below.

➡️ Scoring Options

By expanding the More Options menu, you can see additional scoring options

  • Default Values: if you need to have any bubbles filled in for the question, you can fill them in here. Any values you select in this section will be pre filled-in for the students.

  • Unscored/Practice usage: removes all scoring from the item.

  • Check answer button & Check answer attempts: find more information here!

  • Penalty points: use this option if you want students to lose points for giving incorrect answers.

  • Minimum score if attempted: student will receive points as long as the question has been attempted (if the question is left blank or is unanswered, the student will not earn those points).

  • Enable Auto scoring: you can disable auto scoring by unchecking this option.

Additional Options

➡️ Layout Options

There are additional layout options to choose from under the Layout section.

  • Columns and Range of numbers to use: Both of these values can be changed. The default number of columns is 6 and the default range of numbers is 0-9. Note that the largest number that can appear in the Gridded question is 9.

  • Plus/minus column: when this is enabled, a column with only a plus and a minus symbol available will appear as the first column in the question.

  • Fixed decimal: When this is enabled, you can enter a value for which number column will contain the fixed decimal - e.g. 3 will input the fixed decimal in the third (numeric) column. The fixed decimal can only be added to columns that don't contain the plus and minus symbols. The student cannot edit the box containing the fixed decimal, which means they cannot remove or change the fixed decimal.

  • Floating decimal: the decimal bubble will appear in each column so the student has the choice to place the decimal anywhere.

  • Fraction slash: when this is enabled, the fraction slash bubble will appear in the appropriate columns.

  • Font size: the font size can be changed to Small, Normal, Large, Extra large, or Huge.
