Teachers have the ability to enable Lockdown Browser mode for students while they take an assessment in Otus.

❗️Important Note: The lockdown browser requires software that must be installed on student devices. Before enabling the lockdown browser setting on your assigned assessments, please confirm that students are able to download the software on their individual devices, or that the school or district has already installed the appropriate Respondus lockdown browser software on school-managed devices.

What does the Lockdown Browser do?

  • Displays the assessment in full screen and cannot be minimized.

  • The browser menu and Otus navigation bar are removed except for Back, Forward, Refresh, and Stop.

  • Prevents access to other applications while in the assessment, including messaging, screen-sharing, virtual machines, and remote desktops.

  • Prevents copying and pasting anything to or from an assessment.

  • Right-click menu options, function keys, keyboard shortcuts, and task switches are disabled.

  • The assessment can't be exited until the student has submitted it.

Install the Lockdown Browser Software

Click the buttons below for instructions on downloading Respondus Lockdown Browser to a PC, Mac, iPad, Chromebook, or using a Mobile Device Manager (MDM).

Enable the Lockdown Browser for an Assessment

  • When you assign your assessment, scroll to Settings and check Lockdown Browser.

Student View

When students select an assessment that has the Lockdown Browser enabled, they will select Start on the first prompt, then Take Assessment on the Lockdown Browser prompt.

Students are restricted to the assessment screen until they finish and submit their assessments. This means that students cannot have additional time or testing sessions to complete the assessment.

Special Steps for Students on Chromebooks

  • Students can launch the Respondus Lockdown Browser with our special Chromebook app by selecting “Otus” from the Apps link on their login screen.

  • When the App starts, the login page will appear and the student can log in and navigate to the exam.

  • Once the exam is complete the user must restart the Chromebook to fully exit the exam.
