This article will outline the submission statuses of On Time, Missing, Late, Excused, and Excluded (also known as Exempt).

Submission Status Categories

On Time

  • As long as the student submits the assessment prior to the due date/time (if one is set), it will automatically be marked as On Time.

Missing

  • If a due date has passed and the student has not submitted the assessment, it will automatically be marked as Missing.

  • Missing assessments are not automatically given a zero (0). The teacher can manually score the assessment with a 0.

  • If you would like to allow students to complete a Missing assessment after giving them a 0, please see this article for more details.

Late

  • If the student submits the assessment after the due date, it will automatically be marked as Late.

  • An assessment will also automatically be marked Late if a grade is added to a Missing assessment.

Excused

  • This is not automatically given under any circumstance; it has to be manually given by the teacher.

  • Any points score given for assessments that have been marked as excused will not add into the student's total class grade, but the points will still be visible in the gradebook.

Excluded

  • This is automatically given if the "Include Score in Final Grade" setting is unchecked for a points-based assessment. Click here for more information on excluding assessments.

  • Any score given for assessments that have been marked as Excluded will not add into the student's total class grade, but the points will still be visible in the gradebook.

💡 Tip: Any submission status can be manually changed. See below for more information

  • Option 1: in the assessment itself.

  • Option 2: in the assessments gradebook

Option 1: In the Assessment Itself

Each assessment type has a slightly different process. See below for details.

  • Status change is automatically saved.

For a Simple Assessment

  • Locate the Status dropdown at the top; choose the desired status.

  • Status change is automatically saved.

For a Rubric Assessment

  • Select the student you wish to change the status for.

  • Locate the Status dropdown in the bottom-left corner; choose the desired status.

  • Changes are saved automatically

Option 2: Directly in the Assessments Gradebook.

  • Navigate to your Assessments Gradebook

  • Double click on the status to see the submissions statuses in the dropdown.

Student View

Students can view the status of their assessments in two ways.

Option 1: On Their Assessments Page

  • When students navigate to their assessments module, they will see a status column on the right.

  • Missing and Late statuses will appear with any assessment that has been marked as such. See the Image below:

Option 2: In the Assessments Gradebook

  • When the students navigate to the gradebook module, they can select a class from the top, which will expand the assessment details below.

  • In the status column, it will display On Time, Late, Missing, Excused, or Excluded.

Can I mark an assessment Incomplete?

While there is no Incomplete assessment status, you have a couple of options, depending on your goals:

  • If you want it to count towards their grade, grade the assessment

  • If you do not want it to count toward their grade, keep the assessment assigned and set the status to Missing
