Before You Begin
❗ Is this your first time creating an Advanced Assessment? If so, you'll want to check out our Beginner's Guide to Advanced Assessments if you haven't already. Advanced Assessments are our most powerful and intricate assessment tool, and it will be helpful to know the basics before you begin to create one. Once you've taken a look at that guide, come on back here and get started!
Advanced Assessments are our most powerful assessment format. They can be used in a variety of ways and are great for:
Replicating activities that can be found on worksheets
All content areas
Longer, more detailed assessments
Assessments that require a variety of question types
A variety of scoring methods for questions in an assessment (partial credit, alternate answers...)

Create the Shell
Step 1: From the Assessments module,
Step 2: Select Create Assessment in the upper-right corner.
Step 3: Select Advanced from the Otus Assessment options. Give the assessment a name, select a type, and select a grading scale.
Step 4: Select Create.
💡 Tips from the Otus Team:
The Assessment Type does not have any impact on the format or grading unless you have weighted grades in your points gradebook.
Once the assessment is created, the Grading Scale becomes locked. To change the Grading Scale on an assessment, it must be cloned first.
If you think you are missing options for Grading Scales, first verify that a grade level is selected for one of your classes. Some grading scales are only available for certain grade levels in the district. If this doesn't do the trick, reach out to us in the chat feature, and we'll be sure to help you out!
Create Your Items
➡️ First, it is important to know the difference between Items and Questions.
Items are the containers that hold your questions.
Items can have multiple questions and/or features in them.

Navigate Item Bank
The Navigate Item Bank provides pre-built questions linked to standards that can be used on advanced assessments. If your district has subscribed to the Navigate Item Bank, select the button below to learn how to use these items in your advanced assessments!
Preview and Assign the Assessment
After saving and exiting the assessment, you can preview or assign the assessment from within your drafts by selecting the ellipsis to the right of the assessment:

Student Completion
This is an example of what an Advanced Assessment would look like in a student account:
Students navigate from item to item using the navigation bar found on the right-side of the screen.
❓ Are student responses auto-saved? Yes - student responses are auto-saved each time a response is selected/answered.

💡 Tip from the Otus Team - if Otus seems to run slow while building advanced assessments, you may want to check your school site's web filter/firewall (such as Securely) for potentially blocked URLs. There is a list of URLs that should be added to your district's whitelist in order for Otus to function at its best!
