Choose Your Standards

By default, Otus makes all state and common core standards available to teachers.  To begin your setup, you'll want to choose the set of standards you'll be using.

Super Admin users have the ability to limit the standard sets that appear in accounts connected to the district. When a standard is linked to an assessment question or views standards connected to Inspect Items, only the pre-selected standards will display as an option for the user. Additionally, Inspect Item bank items that are connected to this pre-selected standards will display in your account and in the Standards' Gradebook.

To choose your district standards, select the Control Center located on the left-hand tool bar. 

From here, select the standards settings tab located in the center of the page.

Choose standards that you would like to be visible by checking or unchecking the appropriate boxes. To select a certain set of state standards, make sure that the state standard box is marked and the desired state is chosen from the drop down menu.

Choose District Grading Scale 

Now that you have your standards set, you can choose one of Otus' predefined scales, or you can define your own.

Enter the "Control Center" module.

Select "Create Scale"

 Enter the Grading Scale Name, Labels for each level,  and Description (optional).

Select Save!

Don't forget to restrict each grade level to a single grading scale.  By doing this, you're making sure all teachers in the same grade level are using the same scale. This is important because our reports will only pull data for assessments with the same scale.  

 From the Home Page within the Main Administrator account, head to the Control Center.

The Control Center provides additional options for Grading Scales, Admin Permissions, and Custom Standards. You are automatically taken to the Grading Scales page after entering the Control Center. 

From here, you will see the grading scales that are visible to each grade level. You have the option to allow all grades to have access to the grading scale, or you can limit it to certain grading scales. 

To adjust the visibility of certain grade scales, click on the section below Visible To.You can select the X to remove certain grade levels. If you click the box a second time, a drop-down menu will appear that will allow you to select or deselect various grade levels.

Choosing your Mastery Settings

Once you've created a grading scale, you'll want to decide how you're going to calculate your standards grades, as students will most likely be graded on the same standards multiple times.   There are 5 different mastery settings you can choose from, and by default, teachers in all grade levels can choose all 5 of them when viewing standards grades:

  • Highest
  • Mean
  • Mode
  • Decaying Average
  • Most Recent

As a district you may only want teachers and students in different grade levels to view mastery by the most recent assessment of standards, or perhaps the median, or decaying average.  In the Otus Super Admin account, you can control which mastery settings are visible in teachers' gradebooks and analytics pages by grade level.

From the homescreen, click Control Center.

Click the tab that says Mastery Settings.

From this page, you can specify which grades, all grades, or no grades for each type of mastery calculation method: Mean, Mode, Most Recent, Highest, or Decaying Average.  Click the pencil to make changes for each respective row.

Term Conversion

If some of your teachers will be creating assessments with traditional points and not grading on a term-based scale, you'll want to set up term conversion to convert student scores on items and questions into a scale score for the connected standard.

In order to adjust the numeric ranges for each term in the grading scale, you must be logged into the Main Administrator account. 

Within the Main Administrator account, select Control Center from the lefthand toolbar.

The Control Center provides additional options for Grading Scales, Admin Permissions, and Custom Standards. You are automatically taken to the Grading Scales page after entering the Control Center.  From here, you will see the grading scales that each grade level is able to view.

You view the term conversion settings by selecting the ellipse that appears when you hover to the right of the grading scale as shown in the image below.

Once you are viewing the Term Conversion for a specific grading scale, you will notice two different sections. Both sections must be completed in order to save the term conversion. 

The section to the right will take a numeric value that falls within the range you have determined and change it to the term name that you have chosen (exceeds, meets, approaching, etc..). 

The portion to the right will award the pre-determined numeric value to the corresponding term.

After the conversions are applied, you will have the ability to toggle between the different grading scale views in the Standards' Gradebook. 

Standards Based Report Cards

Generate a large number of individualized report PDFs in your admin account by clicking on the "Analytics" tab, then "Reports".

If you'd also like to report standards mastery and have been assessing students with Otus Assessments that are connected to standards, check "Standard Gradebook", pick which grading scale to use, how you'd like Otus to calculate mastery (Mean, Median, Mode, Decaying Average, or Most Recent), and which standards to include in the report.   

Check the "Attendance" box if you'd like to include attendance data.

Check the "Notes" box if you'd like to include notes that teachers added to the student profile.  When a teacher adds a note to the student profile, they are given the option to include this note in reporting, so if they don't check that option, the note won't be included in the report card, even if "Notes" is checked.

Select "Grading Scale Key" for a legend to be printed that explains the custom grading scale.

Finally, you can include a footer that requires either a family signature and/or a student signature line, as well as a message field where you can add positive feedback or reminders.  

Once you're all set, click "Export".  A new screen will pop up and give you a timeline for when the export will be finished.  If you're exporting a lot of report cards, this can take some time, but be sure not to close out the window doing the export. When finished, a new window will open up with PDFs that you can now save and print.
